In Jewish law, time isn't always measured in fixed, 60-minute segments. Many commandments are tied to specific times of the day, but what constitutes a 'day'? The system used is called Sha'ot Zmaniyot, or proportional hours. A proportional hour is defined as one-twelfth of the daylight period.

This means that a 'halakhic hour' is not a constant unit. Its length stretches and shrinks depending on the season and geographic location. This system ensures that daily rituals remain anchored to the natural cycle of the sun, rather than the mechanical ticking of a clock.

Defining the Day

Before you can divide the day into twelve parts, you first need to define what the 'day' is. There are two primary opinions on this, each establishing different start and end points for calculation.

The first method, attributed to the Vilna Gaon (known as the Gra), is the more straightforward approach. It defines the day as the period from sunrise (netz ha'chama) to sunset (shkiah). You simply take the total time between these two events and divide it by twelve.

The second method, from the Magen Avraham, uses a more extended definition of the day. It calculates the daylight period from the first moments of dawn (alot ha'shachar) until the appearance of stars at nightfall (tzait ha'kochavim). This results in a longer overall 'day,' and consequently, a longer proportional hour.

The Seasonal Effect

The most significant consequence of using proportional hours is their seasonal variation. During the long days of summer, the time from sunrise to sunset is extended. As a result, each of the twelve proportional hours is longer than 60 minutes. In the winter, the opposite occurs. With less daylight, each proportional hour becomes shorter than 60 minutes.

This fluctuation ensures that time-bound commandments are performed at the correct corresponding point in the day's solar cycle, regardless of the season. For example, the latest time for the morning Shema, which is three proportional hours into the day, will be much later on a clock in June than it is in December.

Calculating the precise length of a proportional hour is a matter of simple arithmetic, once you have the correct times for the start and end of the day.
