Understanding YouTube Monetization

Making Money on YouTube

YouTube provides a path for creators to earn money from their content. This isn't just for viral stars; it's an option for anyone who builds a dedicated audience. The official gateway to earning revenue is the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).

Think of it as a partnership. You create and upload videos, and once you're in the program, YouTube can place ads on them. You then get a share of the revenue from those ads. But first, your channel needs to qualify.

Joining the Partner Program

Getting into the YPP requires meeting specific thresholds. These milestones show YouTube that you have an active, engaged audience. As of 2026, there are two main paths to qualify, depending on the type of content you create.

You must have at least 1,500 subscribers to be considered for the YouTube Partner Program.

Once you hit the subscriber goal, you also need to meet a viewership requirement. This is where you have two options.

Video FormatViewership Requirement (in the last 12 months)
Long-form videos5,000 valid public watch hours
Shorts12 million valid public Shorts views

You only need to meet one of the viewership requirements, not both. So if your channel is focused on longer videos, you’ll aim for watch hours. If you're a Shorts creator, your target will be Shorts views.

Meeting these numbers doesn't guarantee entry. Your channel also has to follow all of YouTube’s rules. This is a crucial step in the review process.

Playing by the Rules

Having the subscribers and views is only half the battle. To be accepted into the YPP and stay in it, your channel must adhere to YouTube's content policies. These rules are in place to keep the platform safe for viewers, creators, and advertisers.

When you apply for the YPP, YouTube's team will manually review your channel. They check your theme, most-watched videos, and metadata (like titles and thumbnails) to ensure you comply with the guidelines. Violating these policies can lead to your application being rejected or your channel being removed from the program later on.

The main policies affecting monetization include:

  • Community Guidelines: These are the basic rules of the road. They prohibit content like spam, hate speech, and dangerous or harmful acts.
  • AdSense Program Policies: Since ad revenue is paid through AdSense, you must follow its rules. This includes things like not clicking on your own ads or using deceptive ways to generate clicks.
  • Copyright Policies: You must own the rights to the content you upload. Using music, video clips, or images that you don't have permission for can result in copyright strikes and make your videos ineligible for monetization.

Staying familiar with these rules is essential for any creator who wants to build a sustainable channel on the platform.

Time to check what you've learned.
