It's important to understand that PPE is the final line of defense. Before reaching for a helmet or gloves, an employer should always try to remove the hazard entirely or reduce the risk in other ways. But when a risk can't be completely eliminated, PPE becomes essential for keeping you safe on the job.

Workplace safety isn't just one person's job. Both employers and employees have crucial roles to play in making sure PPE is used effectively. It’s a partnership where each side has clear duties.

The employer's primary responsibility is to identify the hazards present and provide the right equipment to protect against them. This isn't a one-size-fits-all situation. The gear must be appropriate for the specific risk, fit the employee correctly, and be kept in good working order. They also need to provide clear instructions and training on how to use, care for, and store the equipment properly.

On the other side, employees have a responsibility to use the PPE they've been given. This means wearing it correctly every time they are exposed to the hazard, following the training they received. It also involves taking reasonable care of the equipment and reporting any defects, damage, or loss to their supervisor immediately. A damaged glove or a cracked helmet can't do its job.
