Your Body in the Cold

When you step out into the cold, your body immediately starts working to protect its core temperature. Your top priority is keeping vital organs like your heart, lungs, and brain warm. To do this, your body narrows the blood vessels in your extremities, a process called vasoconstriction. This reduces blood flow to your skin, hands, and feet, which helps minimize heat loss from the surface of your body. It’s why your fingers and toes are the first things to feel cold.

If vasoconstriction isn't enough, your body's next move is to start shivering. Shivering is simply your muscles contracting and relaxing rapidly. This involuntary muscle activity generates heat, which helps raise your body temperature.

When the Cold Wins

Sometimes, the body's defenses aren't enough to combat prolonged exposure to cold. When your body loses heat faster than it can produce it, you can develop a dangerous condition called hypothermia.

Early signs of hypothermia include intense shivering, fatigue, and loss of coordination. As it worsens, the shivering may stop, and the person can become confused or disoriented. This is a serious medical emergency requiring immediate attention.

Frostbite occurs when ice crystals form in your skin and other tissues, damaging them. The affected area may feel numb and look waxy or pale. It's a serious injury that can lead to permanent damage if not treated properly.

Dressing for the Cold

Preventing hypothermia and frostbite starts with dressing appropriately. The key is to wear several layers of clothing rather than one single, heavy coat. Layering traps air between the fabrics, and this trapped air acts as an excellent insulator. It also gives you the flexibility to add or remove layers to avoid overheating and sweating, which can make you colder once the sweat cools.
