Vinod Khosla was born in Pune, India, in 1955. His father was an officer in the Indian Army, and the family moved frequently, living on various military bases. This upbringing instilled discipline but also pointed him toward a conventional career path. For much of his youth, Khosla assumed he would follow in his father's footsteps and join the army.

But a different path began to emerge. As a teenager, he stumbled upon a copy of Electronic Engineering Times magazine. In it, he read about the founding of Intel Corporation. The story of entrepreneurs building a technology company from the ground up captivated him. It was a pivotal moment. The idea of creating something new, something with massive potential, sparked an ambition that would steer him away from a military life and toward Silicon Valley.

Khosla's first major step was gaining admission to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Delhi, one of the country's most prestigious engineering schools. He pursued a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, building a strong technical foundation.

After graduating, he set his sights on the United States. He earned a master's degree in biomedical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. This move not only broadened his technical knowledge but also exposed him to a new culture of innovation.

His final academic stop was Stanford University, where he enrolled in the Graduate School of Business. Earning his MBA from Stanford placed him in the epicenter of the burgeoning tech world. He was surrounded by the people, ideas, and capital that would soon ignite the personal computer revolution. This combination of engineering expertise and business strategy prepared him for the ventures that lay ahead.

With his education complete, Khosla was ready to leave his mark on the world of technology.
