The birth chart is divided into twelve segments called Bhāvas, or houses. Each house represents a specific area of life, from personality and finances to relationships and spirituality. They provide the context for the planets and signs.

The houses are numbered one through twelve, starting from the eastern horizon at the time of birth. This starting point is one of the most crucial elements in the entire chart: the Ascendant, or Lagna.

The Lagna determines the orientation of the entire chart. It represents the self, the physical body, and one's overall disposition. It sets the stage, defining which sign rules which house and influencing how the planetary energies are experienced throughout a person's life.

Vedic astrology adds another layer of detail with the Nakshatras, or lunar mansions. The zodiac is further divided into 27 Nakshatras, and each one has its own distinct characteristics, ruling deity, and symbolism.
