The YouTube algorithm's primary goal is to keep people watching, so it heavily rewards videos and channels that prove they can hold an audience's attention.

Think of it this way: a high view count with low retention signals to YouTube that your thumbnail and title were compelling, but the content didn't deliver on the promise. This can hurt your video's chances of being recommended. In contrast, strong retention tells the algorithm that your video is valuable and should be shown to more people. The more powerful metric is Relative Retention. This compares your video's retention not just to videos of a similar length, but to videos with similar audience patterns and topics. This data is what truly tells you if your video is performing 'above average' or 'below average' in your specific niche. YouTube uses this relative performance as a strong signal for recommendations.

Spikes, Dips, and Session Time

Your retention graph isn't just a grade—it's a roadmap. The bumps and valleys tell a story about how your audience experiences the video.

Spikes are parts of the video that are re-watched more than others. This is a powerful positive signal. Did you explain a complex topic clearly? Was there a particularly funny or surprising moment? Identify what caused the spike and consider using that technique again.

Dips are moments where viewers skip ahead or leave the video entirely. These are critical learning opportunities. Common causes for dips include long introductions, confusing segments, a change in topic, or a slow-paced section. Analyse your dips to find patterns. Are your intros always causing a drop-off? Maybe they need to be shorter and more direct.

Use YouTube Analytics to see which parts of your videos people are rewatching and which parts they are skipping.

Beyond the individual video, YouTube also values —the total time a viewer spends on the platform after starting with your video. A successful video not only holds attention but encourages the viewer to watch another video afterward, whether it's yours or someone else's.

This is why end screen performance matters. A high click-through rate on an end screen element that leads to another one of your videos directly increases session duration and sends a strong signal to YouTube that your content is engaging and satisfying for viewers.

To benchmark effectively, don't just look at YouTube's 'Typical Retention'. Find 5-10 channels in your niche with a similar audience size. Watch their most successful videos and study their structure. How long are their intros? Where do they place their calls to action? How do they pace their content? Comparing your retention graphs to this direct competition provides the most actionable insights.
