Identifying Test Versions
Which Test Version Is Yours?
The single most important factor determining which U.S. civics test you'll take is the filing date on your , the Application for Naturalization. This date locks you into one of two test versions. There are no exceptions.
| Feature | 2008 Civics Test | 2025 Civics Test |
|---|---|---|
| If you file N-400... | Before Oct. 20, 2025 | On or after Oct. 20, 2025 |
| Total Questions | 100 | 128 |
| Questions Asked | Up to 10 | Up to 20 |
| Correct to Pass | 6 | 12 |
The format is an oral exam. A USCIS officer will ask you the questions in English and you must answer in English. The questions are not multiple choice. You need to know the answers from memory.
How the Test Works
One of the most important things to know is that your answers must be exact. The official study guides provide the questions and the acceptable answers. You must provide one of the answers listed in the guide, word for word.
Another key feature is the "early stop" rule. The officer administering the test will stop asking questions as soon as you reach the passing threshold. They will also stop if it becomes impossible for you to pass.
For the 2008 test, the exam ends once you answer 6 questions correctly or 5 questions incorrectly. For the 2025 test, it ends after 12 correct answers or 9 incorrect answers.
This means you won't necessarily be asked all 10 (or 20) questions. If you answer the first six questions of the 2008 test correctly, the civics portion of your interview is over and you've passed.
The 65/20 Consideration
There is a special consideration for older, long-term residents. If you are 65 years of age or older and have been a legal of the United States for 20 or more years, you qualify for a simplified test.
Instead of studying the full bank of 100 or 128 questions, you only need to study from a smaller list of 20 specific questions. From this list, you will be asked up to 10 questions and must answer 6 correctly to pass. This rule applies regardless of which main test version (2008 or 2025) is in effect.
Now that you know which test to prepare for, let's check your understanding.
