The Distance Around
Imagine you want to build a fence around a rectangular garden. To figure out how much fencing material you need, you have to measure the total length of the garden's boundary. This total length is called the perimeter.

A key feature of rectangles is that their opposite sides are equal in length. This gives us a simple formula. If we call the two different side lengths 'length' () and 'width' (), we can calculate the perimeter () like this:

Let's say a rectangular garden is 10 feet long and 5 feet wide. To find its perimeter, we add the sides: 10 + 5 + 10 + 5 = 30 feet. Or, using the formula: $2(10) + 2(5) = 20 + 10 = 30$ feet. You would need 30 feet of fencing.
Why Perimeter Matters
Knowing how to calculate perimeter is a practical skill. It helps answer questions like:

- How far do you run if you complete one lap around a soccer field?
