What Is General Intelligence?

Have you ever noticed that some people seem to be quick learners across the board? They might pick up a new language, understand complex math problems, and excel at strategic games with what looks like minimal effort. This underlying capability is what psychologists refer to as general intelligence, or the "g factor."

Think of it like general athletic ability. An athlete who is naturally coordinated, strong, and fast will likely be good at many different sports, from soccer to swimming. They have a high level of general athleticism. The g factor is the mental equivalent. It's a broad mental capacity that influences performance on various cognitive tasks.

General intelligence isn't about knowing a lot of facts. It's the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, and learn from experience.

The Origin of 'g'

The concept of the g factor dates back to the early 20th century, with an English psychologist named Charles Spearman. He was studying the performance of students on a range of seemingly unrelated subjects. Spearman noticed a consistent pattern: students who performed well in one area, like French, also tended to do well in others, like mathematics.

This consistent positive correlation suggested to him that there wasn't just a collection of separate, independent abilities. Instead, he proposed that a single, underlying factor—a general intelligence—was influencing their performance across all these different tasks. He called this the g factor.

According to him intellectual abilities are comprised of two factors, namely; the general ability known as G-factor and specific Abilities known as S-factors.

Spearman developed a "two-factor theory" of intelligence. He argued that every cognitive task requires a mix of two things: the g factor, which is available for all tasks, and an "s factor," representing a specific ability unique to that task (like musical or artistic talent). So, your ability to solve a Rubik's Cube would depend on your general intelligence (g) plus your specific spatial reasoning ability (s).

What 'g' Involves

So what cognitive functions does the g factor actually cover? It's not just one thing, but an interplay of several high-level abilities. These include:

  • Reasoning: The ability to think logically and solve problems in new situations.
  • Problem-solving: Identifying the components of a problem and finding a path to a solution.
  • Abstract thinking: The capacity to understand complex ideas, see patterns, and grasp concepts that aren't tied to concrete objects or events.
  • Learning: The ability to acquire new knowledge and skills quickly from experience, instruction, or observation.

These functions are highly interconnected. For example, learning a new programming language involves abstract thinking to understand the logic, reasoning to debug code, and problem-solving to build an application.
