Your Workspace
Opening a new Unity project for the first time feels a bit like stepping into a workshop. You're surrounded by tools and panels, and it can be a lot to take in. But just like a physical workshop, every part of the Unity Editor has a specific purpose. Once you know what each tool does, the entire space becomes much more manageable.
The Unity interface is made up of several windows, or panels, that you can move, resize, and group together. Think of them as your workbench, your toolbox, and your instruction manual, all visible at once. Let's walk through the most important ones you'll use in every project.
This is a typical layout. We'll break down what each of these windows is for.
Building and Playing
The largest area in the middle of the screen is where you'll do most of your creative work. It's split between two essential views: the Scene view and the Game view.
The Scene view is your interactive construction space. It's a 3D (or 2D) window where you build your world. You can move around freely, place objects like characters and scenery, and arrange everything exactly how you want it. This is where you are the director, setting the stage.
Right next to it, you'll find the Game view tab. Clicking this shows you what the player will see through the game's camera. When you press the Play button at the top of the editor, this window comes alive and you can play your game right there. It's your instant preview of the final product.
Organizing Your Project
Two other windows help you keep track of everything in your project: the Hierarchy and the Project window. They might sound similar, but they manage different things.

The Hierarchy window gives you a list of all the GameObjects in your open scene. If you add a character, a light, or a camera to your scene, it appears in this list. You can select, group, and organize your scene's contents here.
The Project window is your file cabinet. It contains every asset you have available to use, like 3D models, textures, sound files, and scripts. These are the raw materials. To use an asset, you drag it from the Project window into your Scene view or Hierarchy.
The Details Panel
Whenever you select a GameObject in the Scene or Hierarchy, or an asset in the Project window, its properties appear in the Inspector window. This is where you can see and edit all the details about that item.
Think of the Inspector as a control panel. If you select a light, the Inspector will show controls for its brightness and color. If you select a character, you'll see its position, rotation, and any components that define its behavior, like a physics script or an animator.
Every object in Unity is a blank slate. The Inspector is where you attach components to give it functionality and change its settings.
Finally, Unity is flexible. You can customize this layout completely. Click and drag the tab of any window to move it, dock it somewhere else, or let it float freely. You can save your favorite layouts and switch between them. Most developers create different layouts for different tasks, like level design, animation, or coding.
Go to Window > Layouts to try out some of the defaults, or just start dragging panels around to create a setup that works for you.
