Unity Editor Basics
Meet the Unity Editor
Welcome to your new workshop. The Unity Editor is where you'll build every part of your game, from arranging 3D models and designing levels to tweaking colors and sounds. Think of it as a digital studio filled with specialized tools.
At first, it might look complex, but it's organized around a simple idea: giving you different views of your project. Each panel, or window, has a specific job. Once you learn what each one does, the entire interface will start to feel intuitive. Let's break down the most important ones.
Your Core Windows
Five windows form the backbone of your workflow in Unity. You'll have them open nearly all the time. Understanding how they interact is the key to building games efficiently.
The Scene and Game windows are your visual workspaces. One is for building, the other is for playing.
The Scene window is your interactive construction area. It's a 2D or 3D view where you place, move, and arrange all the objects that make up your game world. This is where you build your levels, position your characters, and set up your lighting. You are the director, and this is your stage.
The Game window shows you exactly what the player will see through the game's camera. It's your live preview. When you press the 'Play' button in Unity, this window comes to life and lets you test your game instantly. You can't directly move objects here, but you can see how they behave during gameplay.

Next are the windows that help you organize everything.
The Hierarchy window is a list of every object currently in your Scene. If you add a character, a tree, or a light to your Scene, its name appears here. Think of it as a cast and crew list for the current level. Selecting an object in the Hierarchy will also highlight it in the Scene, making it easy to find.
The Project window is your game's entire library. It holds all the assets you have available to use, like 3D models, textures, sound files, and scripts. These are the raw materials. They aren't in your game yet; they're just in the project, ready to be used. To use an asset, you drag it from the Project window into the Scene or Hierarchy.
Finally, there's the Inspector window. This is the properties panel. Whenever you select an object in the Scene, Hierarchy, or an asset in the Project window, the Inspector displays all of its detailed information and settings. This is where you can change an object's position, rotation, scale, color, or any other component attached to it. If the other windows tell you what you have, the Inspector tells you what it's like and lets you make changes.
Managing Your Projects
Every game you make starts as a Unity Project. This is essentially a folder that contains all your assets, scenes, and settings. You manage your projects through the Unity Hub, a separate application that lists all your projects and installed versions of the Unity Editor.
When you create a new project, Unity Hub will ask you to choose a template. These templates, like 2D or 3D, set up the editor with sensible defaults for the kind of game you want to make. Don't worry, you can always change these settings later.
A clean project is a happy project. Organize your assets into folders from the very beginning. You'll thank yourself later.
Inside your Project window, it’s a best practice to create folders to keep your assets organized. You might have folders named Materials, Scripts, Models, and Audio. This structure makes it much easier to find what you need as your game grows larger and more complex.
