Meet the Unity Editor
The Unity Editor is your command center for game development. Think of it as a digital workshop, filled with all the tools you need to build your worlds. It can seem like a lot at first, but each part has a specific job. Learning your way around is the first step to creating anything you can imagine.
Before you can build, you need to set up your workspace. Creating a new project is simple. You'll go to File > New Project. Unity will then ask you to choose a template, like 2D or 3D. Pick the one that fits your game idea, give your project a name, choose where to save it, and you’re ready to go.
Unity sets up a new folder for your project with all the necessary files and subfolders. It's best to let Unity manage this structure and avoid moving files around outside of the editor.
Your Core Toolkit
The editor is organized into several windows, or panels, that you can resize and rearrange. We'll focus on the five most important ones: the Scene, Game, Hierarchy, Project, and Inspector windows. Mastering how these windows interact is key to a smooth workflow.
Let's break down what each window does.
The Main Windows
The Scene and Game Windows
The Scene window is your interactive sandbox. It's a visual representation of your game world where you'll place, move, and arrange all your game objects, like characters, scenery, and lights. You can fly around this space to see your creation from any angle.
The Game window shows you exactly what the player will see through the game camera. When you press the 'Play' button at the top of the editor, this window comes to life and you can test your game in real-time. The Scene window is for building; the Game window is for playing.
You can switch between the Scene and Game views by clicking their respective tabs, which are usually located together.
The Hierarchy Window
To the side of the Scene view, you'll find the Hierarchy window. This is a text-based list of every single object currently in your scene. If you add a tree to your scene, its name appears here. If you select an object in the Scene, it gets highlighted in the Hierarchy, and vice versa. This window is perfect for organizing your scene by grouping related objects together, known as 'parenting'.
The Project Window
Below the Scene and Hierarchy is the Project window. Think of this as your game's asset library. It contains all the files for your project: 3D models, textures, sound files, scripts, and more. These are the building blocks available for you to use. To add something to your game, you simply drag it from the Project window into your Scene or Hierarchy.
The Inspector Window
Finally, there's the Inspector window. Whenever you select an object in the Scene or Hierarchy, or an asset in the Project window, the Inspector displays all of its properties, settings, and components. This is where you make adjustments. Want to change an object's color, size, or position? You'll do it in the Inspector. It's the ultimate control panel for everything in your game.

These five windows form the foundation of your workflow in Unity. You'll constantly move between them: grabbing an asset from the Project window, placing it in the Scene, selecting it in the Hierarchy, and tweaking its properties in the Inspector, all while checking the result in the Game window.
