This means you might have to lock up $2 worth of Ethereum to mint $1 worth of a stablecoin. The extra collateral acts as a buffer to absorb price swings in the backing asset.

Algorithmic

This is the most complex and experimental category. Algorithmic stablecoins aren't backed by any collateral. Instead, they use smart contracts—self-executing code on a blockchain—to manage the token's supply. If the stablecoin's price rises above its peg (e.g., $1.01), the algorithm mints new tokens to increase supply and lower the price. If it falls below (e.g., $0.99), the algorithm buys tokens off the market to reduce supply and raise the price. This approach is innovative but has proven difficult to sustain, with some high-profile projects failing.
