The CNESST as we know it today is a relatively new organization, established on January 1, 2016. However, its roots go back much further. It was formed by merging three distinct government bodies that each handled a different aspect of labor law.

This merger brought together the agency for labor standards (CNT), the agency for pay equity (CES), and the agency for occupational health and safety (CSST). Combining them created a one-stop shop for workplace issues in Québec, streamlining services for both employees and employers.

The core mission of the CNESST is to promote fair and safe working conditions. This mission is built on three main pillars, reflecting the responsibilities of the organizations it absorbed.

Its main objectives are to:
