Introduction to Power

What Is Power?

Imagine two weightlifters lifting the exact same barbell to the same height. The first weightlifter hoists it up in two seconds. The second takes a full ten seconds. They both did the same amount of work, but something is clearly different. The first weightlifter was more powerful.

In physics, power is the measure of how quickly work is done or how fast energy is transferred. It's not just about how much work you do, but how fast you do it. A machine that does a lot of work very quickly has a high power output. A machine that does the same work slowly has a low power output.

Power measures how quickly work is done or energy is transferred.

We can express this relationship with a simple formula. Power (PP) is equal to the work done (WW) divided by the time it took (tt).

The standard unit for power is the watt, named after the Scottish engineer James Watt. One watt is equal to one joule of work done per second.

Average vs. Instantaneous Power

The formula P=W/tP = W/t gives us the average power over a specific time interval. For many situations, this is all we need. If you run up a flight of stairs, you can calculate your average power output by dividing the total work you did by the total time it took.

But what if the power isn't constant? When a car accelerates from a stoplight, its power output changes from moment to moment. To describe this, we need the concept of instantaneous power — the power at a single, specific point in time.

To find instantaneous power, we look at the work done over an infinitesimally small time interval. In calculus terms, power is the derivative of work with respect to time.

This formula tells us the precise rate at which work is being done at any given instant.

The graph shows how these two concepts relate. Average power is the slope of the line connecting two points in time, giving you the overall rate. Instantaneous power is the slope of the curve at a single point, telling you the rate at that exact moment.
