In physics, inertia is an object's resistance to any change in its state of motion. An object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion. For many autistic brains, focus works in a similar way. This creates two distinct challenges: starting inertia and stopping inertia.

Getting the Train Moving

Starting inertia is the immense difficulty in beginning a task, even one you want to do. It can feel like a physical barrier. You know what needs to be done. You have the skills. But the mental engine just won't turn over. This is the freight train sitting cold on the tracks. It requires a huge surge of energy to overcome that initial stillness.

This is the crucial difference between 'won't' and 'can't.' From the outside, it might look like you're simply refusing to start. But internally, it's a genuine inability to engage. The neural pathways needed for aren't firing easily. The mental effort required to bridge the gap between 'intending to do' and 'doing' is monumental. It's not a choice; it's a state of being.

Trying to force the start can lead to burnout, like flooding an engine. The energy is spent, but there's no movement.

Rolling at Full Speed

Once the train gets moving, stopping inertia takes over. After finally getting into a task, the brain builds powerful momentum. This is the state of or flow, where you're deeply immersed and highly productive. The world outside the task fades away. All your cognitive resources are dedicated to the activity at hand. The train is now thundering down the tracks at top speed.

An interruption during this state isn't just a minor distraction; it's a derailment. It feels like a sudden, jarring crash. Being asked to switch tasks quickly can be disorienting and even physically uncomfortable. All that built-up momentum is lost, and you know how much energy it will take to get another train moving again. This is why unexpected changes or transitions can be so distressing.

Working with your brain's inertia means respecting its physics. It involves planning for the energy needed to start and creating blocks of protected time to allow for deep, uninterrupted focus. It’s about building a schedule that works with the train, not against it, allowing it to get up to speed and slow down on its own terms.
