When you look at a piece of religious art, how do you know who the important figures are? Artists have developed a visual shorthand to guide our eyes and understanding. One of the most recognizable symbols is a glowing circle or disc of light that appears behind or above the head of a holy person.

This symbol, called a halo, acts like a spotlight, immediately telling the viewer that the person depicted is special. It separates them from ordinary mortals in the scene. Think of it as a spiritual aura made visible, a sign of inner grace shining outward.
