Introduction to Fog
A Cloud on the Ground
Have you ever walked outside on a cool morning and felt like you were inside a cloud? In a way, you were. Fog is simply a cloud that forms at or near the Earth's surface instead of high up in the atmosphere. It’s made of tiny water droplets or, if it's cold enough, ice crystals that are suspended in the air.
Fog is a cloud that touches the ground.
This low-lying cloud can appear in valleys, over bodies of water, or across wide-open fields, reducing visibility and giving the landscape an ethereal, mysterious quality.
The Recipe for Fog
Fog doesn’t just appear out of nowhere. It requires a specific set of ingredients and conditions to form. Think of it like a recipe with three key components: moisture, cooling, and tiny particles.
First, you need plenty of moisture in the air. This means the air has a high relative humidity, which is a measure of how much water vapor it's holding compared to the maximum amount it could hold at that temperature.
Second, this moist air needs to be cooled down to its dew point. The dew point is the temperature at which air becomes saturated with water vapor and that vapor begins to condense into liquid water.

When the air temperature and the dew point are very close, fog is likely to form. It's the same reason you see water droplets form on the outside of a cold glass on a humid day. The air touching the glass cools to its dew point, and the water vapor condenses into visible water.
The final ingredient is a collection of microscopic particles in the air, such as dust, pollen, salt from the ocean, or pollution. These are called condensation nuclei. Water vapor needs a surface to condense upon, and these tiny, invisible particles provide the perfect platform for droplets to form and create fog.
Fog, Mist, or Haze?
People often use the terms fog, mist, and haze interchangeably, but meteorologists distinguish them based on how much they impact visibility.
The main difference between fog and mist is density. Both are made of water droplets, but fog is much thicker.
If you can see less than 1 kilometer (about 0.62 miles), it's officially fog. If you can see further than that, but still less than 2 kilometers, it's mist.
Haze is something different altogether. It's caused by dry, solid particles in the air, like smoke, dust, and other pollutants. These particles scatter sunlight, which can make the sky look murky or discolored. Unlike fog or mist, haze doesn't feel damp because it's not made of water droplets.
