The term 'cuckoldry' describes a situation where a person's partner is sexually unfaithful. Traditionally, the word 'cuckold' refers specifically to a man whose wife has cheated on him.

The Cuckoo Connection
The word 'cuckold' comes directly from the cuckoo bird. It’s derived from the Old French word for the bird, cucu, which mimics its distinctive two-note call.
The connection is more than just sound. Cuckoos are famous for a behavior known as brood parasitism. A female cuckoo lays her eggs in the nest of another bird species. The host bird is then tricked into incubating the egg and raising the cuckoo chick as its own, often at the expense of its actual offspring.
This act of deception is the root of the term. A 'cuckold' was originally seen as a man who, like the host bird, was unknowingly investing his resources—time, energy, and name—into raising a child that was not biologically his.
Over time, the meaning broadened. It now generally refers to any man whose wife is unfaithful, regardless of whether children are involved.
