Standard scuba gear works on a simple principle: you breathe in from a tank and exhale into the water, creating a stream of bubbles. This is called an open-circuit system because the gas is used once and then released. It's reliable and straightforward, but it's not very efficient. A significant portion of the oxygen you inhale isn't actually used by your body, so every exhaled breath wastes usable gas.
A rebreather changes the game. Instead of releasing your breath into the water, a rebreather captures, cleans, and recycles it. It's a closed-circuit system that allows you to breathe the same air again and again. Think of it like the difference between a leaky bucket and a canteen. With the bucket, you're constantly losing water. With the canteen, you keep what you have and only add more when you need it.

Types of Rebreathers

Semi-Closed Rebreathers (SCRs): These systems recycle a portion of the exhaled gas. They constantly add a low, steady flow of a pre-mixed gas (like nitrox) into the breathing loop. As the volume increases, excess gas is periodically vented out. They are mechanically simpler than their closed-circuit cousins but less efficient with gas.
Fully Closed-Circuit Rebreathers (CCRs): This is the system described earlier. A CCR is a complete loop where, in theory, no gas is vented during the dive. It replaces only the oxygen that the diver metabolizes, making it the most efficient option for gas consumption. This precise control is what makes CCRs the tool of choice for deep technical, military, and scientific diving.
