Twilio Platform Overview

What is Twilio?

Twilio is a Communications Platform as a Service, or CPaaS. Think of it as a set of building blocks for communication. Instead of constructing a whole phone network or messaging system from the ground up, businesses can use Twilio's tools to add communication features directly into their own applications.

A developer can use a few lines of code to send a text message, make a phone call, or start a video chat, all powered by Twilio's global infrastructure. This saves them an incredible amount of time and resources.

The significance of CPaaS is its flexibility. Businesses are no longer stuck with one-size-fits-all solutions. They can build the exact communication experiences they want for their customers, whether it's an automated SMS for appointment reminders, a video call for a telehealth session, or a fully-featured cloud contact center. It allows companies to embed communications wherever they need them most.

The Platform Architecture

Twilio's platform is built in layers, each providing a different level of abstraction. At the very bottom is the foundation that makes everything else possible.

Super Network

noun

A global, software-defined network of carrier connections that gives applications resilient, high-quality access to phone networks and internet services worldwide.

On top of the Super Network sit Twilio's Programmable APIs. These are the core building blocks developers use. There are APIs for Voice, Messaging, Video, Email, and more. Each API gives developers control over a specific communication channel.

The final layer consists of applications. These can be applications built by customers using the APIs, or ready-made solutions offered by Twilio, like Twilio Flex for contact centers. These applications leverage the power of the underlying APIs and the Super Network.

Integration and Scalability

A core strength of the Twilio platform is its ability to integrate with the systems businesses already use. Whether it's a CRM like Salesforce, a helpdesk platform, or a custom-built internal tool, Twilio's APIs can connect to it. This means communication capabilities can be added to existing workflows, not siloed in a separate application.

This architecture is also designed for massive scale. The Super Network has points of presence all over the world, ensuring low latency and high-quality connections no matter where a customer's users are. Because it's a cloud service, it can handle huge spikes in demand without any need for the customer to manage physical infrastructure. A business can send ten text messages or ten million; the platform scales automatically to meet the need.
