Angles and Their Measure

What is an Angle?

An angle measures the amount of turn between two lines that meet at a common point. Think of a clock's hands. The point where the hands connect is called the vertex. Each hand represents a ray, which is a line that starts at a point and goes on forever in one direction.

To form an angle, we start with one ray, called the initial side. Then, we rotate another ray, the terminal side, around the vertex. The amount of rotation is the angle.

By convention, we measure angles starting from an initial side that points to the right along a horizontal line. A counter-clockwise rotation creates a positive angle, while a clockwise rotation creates a negative angle. This direction is important!

Measuring in Degrees

The most familiar way to measure angles is in degrees. Imagine taking a full circle and slicing it into 360 equal pieces. Each tiny slice represents one degree, written as 11^{\circ}.

Why 360? The number likely comes from ancient astronomers who noticed the sun took about 360 days to make a full trip through the sky. It's also a convenient number because it can be divided evenly by many other numbers (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, and so on), which makes calculations easier.

A full circle is 360360^{\circ}. A half-circle, or a straight line, is 180180^{\circ}. A quarter-circle, which forms a perfect corner, is a right angle at 9090^{\circ}.

A Different Way to Measure: Radians

In mathematics and science, another unit called the radian is often more useful. The idea is simple and is based directly on the circle itself.

The angle created when the arc length on a circle is equal to the length of its radius.

Imagine a circle with a certain radius, let's call it rr. If you trace along the edge of the circle for a distance of exactly rr, the angle formed at the center is 1 radian.

So, how many radians are in a full circle? The total distance around a circle (its circumference) is 2πr2\pi r. Since 1 radian corresponds to an arc length of rr, a full circle contains 2π2\pi radians.

This might seem strange at first, but radians are considered the "natural" unit for angles. They connect rotation directly to distance (radius and arc length) without any arbitrary numbers like 360.

Switching Between Units

Since 180=π180^{\circ} = \pi radians, we can easily convert between the two systems. This relationship is the key to all conversions.

To convert degrees to radians, multiply the number of degrees by π180\frac{\pi}{180^{\circ}}.

Example: Convert 9090^{\circ} to radians.

90×π180=90π180=π2 radians90^{\circ} \times \frac{\pi}{180^{\circ}} = \frac{90\pi}{180} = \frac{\pi}{2} \text{ radians}

To convert radians to degrees, multiply the number of radians by 180π\frac{180^{\circ}}{\pi}.

Example: Convert 3π4\frac{3\pi}{4} radians to degrees.

3π4×180π=3×1804=3×45=135\frac{3\pi}{4} \times \frac{180^{\circ}}{\pi} = \frac{3 \times 180^{\circ}}{4} = 3 \times 45^{\circ} = 135^{\circ}
