Introduction to TikTok

What Is TikTok?

TikTok is a social media platform built around short-form videos. It began as an app called Douyin in China in 2016. The international version, TikTok, was launched in 2017 and quickly became one of the most downloaded apps in the world after merging with another popular video app, Musical.ly, in 2018.

The core of the platform is a constant stream of user-generated videos, typically ranging from a few seconds to a few minutes. Unlike other platforms that might focus on text, images, or professional content, TikTok thrives on creativity, authenticity, and trends that anyone can participate in.

Its main draw is an endless, personalized feed of content that learns what you like and shows you more of it.

Getting Around the App

When you open TikTok, you land directly on the 'For You' page (FYP). This is the main feed, curated by an algorithm to show you videos it thinks you'll enjoy. You can also switch to the 'Following' tab to see content only from creators you follow.

As you watch a video, you’ll see several icons on the right side of the screen. These let you interact with the content:

  • Profile Picture: Tap this to visit the creator's profile.
  • Heart: This is the 'like' button.
  • Speech Bubble: Tap to read or leave comments.
  • Arrow: This allows you to share the video with others or save it.

At the bottom of the screen is a navigation bar. The 'Home' button takes you back to the For You page, 'Discover' helps you find trending hashtags and sounds, the plus sign (+) opens the camera to create a video, 'Inbox' shows your notifications, and 'Profile' takes you to your own page.

Making Your First Video

Creating content on TikTok is designed to be easy and intuitive. Tapping the plus button at the bottom of the screen opens the camera. From here, you can record video clips directly in the app or upload them from your phone's camera roll.

Unlike platforms that often focus on polished, sales-driven content, TikTok thrives on spontaneity and authenticity.

Before and after recording, you have access to a suite of editing tools. You can add popular sounds or music, apply filters and effects to change your appearance or background, and use timers for hands-free recording. After you've got your clips, you can trim them, add text overlays, and place stickers to make your video more engaging. Once you’re happy with it, you write a caption, add relevant hashtags, and post it.

The 'For You' Page Algorithm

The magic behind TikTok is its recommendation algorithm. The 'For You' page is not based on who you follow; instead, it's a personalized stream of content tailored to your individual interests. The algorithm's goal is to keep you watching by showing you things you'll find entertaining.

TikTok’s For You Page (FYP) is powered by a highly advanced algorithm that learns users’ preferences in real time.

So, how does it know what you like? It learns from your behavior. The main signals it uses are:

  • User Interactions: The videos you like, share, comment on, and watch all the way through tell the algorithm what you enjoy.
  • Video Information: Details like captions, sounds, and hashtags help the algorithm categorize content and recommend it to users interested in those topics.
  • Device and Account Settings: Your language preference, country setting, and device type also play a role, but they are less influential than your direct interactions.

Essentially, every action you take on the app helps refine your 'For You' page. This is why two people can have completely different experiences on TikTok.
