Building with Numbers
You already know that adding is like putting groups of things together, and subtracting is like taking things away. If you have 3 apples and get 2 more, you add them to find you have 5. If you have 5 cookies and eat 2, you subtract to find you have 3 left. Now, let's learn how to do this with much bigger numbers.
The secret to working with big numbers is understanding place value. Every digit in a number has a job based on where it sits. Think of it like a house with different rooms: the ones room, the tens room, and the hundreds room.
In the number 243, the 3 is in the ones place, the 4 is in the tens place (representing 40), and the 2 is in the hundreds place (representing 200). Keeping these places lined up is the most important part of adding and subtracting larger numbers.
Adding Big Numbers
When you add numbers, you stack them on top of each other, making sure the ones, tens, and hundreds places are in perfect columns. Let's add 251 and 134.
First, add the numbers in the ones column: $1 + 4 = 5$. Then, add the tens column: $5 + 3 = 8$. Finally, add the hundreds column: $2 + 1 = 3$. The answer is 385.
Always start adding from the right side, with the ones place!
But what happens when a column adds up to more than 9? This is called regrouping, or carrying over. Let's try adding 168 + 245.
In the ones column, $8 + 5 = 13$. That’s one ten and three ones. We write the 3 in the ones place of our answer and carry the 1 (which is one ten) over to the top of the tens column.
Now add the tens column: $1 + 6 + 4 = 11$. That's eleven tens, which is the same as one hundred and one ten. We write the 1 in the tens place of our answer and carry the other 1 over to the hundreds column.
Finally, add the hundreds column: $1 + 1 + 2 = 4$. We write 4 in the hundreds place. Our final answer is 413.
Subtraction with Big Numbers
Subtraction works the same way. You line up the numbers by place value and start with the ones. But sometimes, the top number in a column is smaller than the bottom number. This is when you need to borrow, or regroup.
Let's subtract 179 from 432.
We start in the ones place. We can't take 9 from 2. So, we need to borrow from the tens place. We go next door to the 3 in the tens place. We take one ten, which leaves 2 tens. That one ten is worth 10 ones, so we add it to our ones place. Now we have 12 ones.
Now we can subtract the ones column: $12 - 9 = 3$.
Next, the tens column. We have 2, but we need to subtract 7. We can't do it, so we borrow again, this time from the hundreds place. We take one hundred (leaving 3 hundreds) and turn it into 10 tens. We add these to the 2 tens we already have, giving us 12 tens.
Now we can subtract the tens column: $12 - 7 = 5$. Finally, the hundreds column: $3 - 1 = 2$. The answer is 253.
Solving Real-World Problems
Math is most useful when it helps us solve problems in everyday life. These are often called word problems.
Let's try one. A library has 375 books. A nearby school donates another 148 books. How many books does the library have in total?
The words "in total" are a clue that we need to add.
The library has 523 books in total.
Here's another one. You have $250 saved up. You spend $115 on a new bike. How much money do you have left?
The words "how much... left" are a clue that we need to subtract.
You have $135 left.
When you see a word problem, first figure out if you need to combine things (add) or take something away (subtract). Then, set up the problem and solve it just like you've learned.
