What is Time Travel?

At its core, time travel is the concept of moving between different points in time, much like you might travel between different cities. In a way, we are all time travelers. We are constantly moving forward into the future at a steady rate of one second per second. Wells didn't just tell a story about visiting the future; he imagined a physical vehicle—a machine—that could navigate the fourth dimension of time just as a car navigates the three dimensions of space.

Since Wells, time travel has become one of the most beloved and enduring themes in science fiction. It's a powerful tool for storytellers because it unlocks a universe of "what if" questions. What if you could meet your ancestors? What if you could prevent a disaster? What if you could see what humanity becomes in a million years?

The laws of physics, particularly Einstein's theory of general relativity, contain equations that technically allow for scenarios that resemble time travel, like pathways through spacetime called "closed timelike curves."

Exploring these extreme possibilities helps scientists probe the fundamental nature of time, space, and causality. If the laws of physics seem to permit travel to the past, but doing so would create paradoxes, it might mean our understanding of those laws is incomplete.
