Why We Test

Testing is more than just passing a class. At its core, a test is a tool for gathering information in a structured way. Whether it’s a final exam, a doctor's checkup, or a product safety check, the goal is to measure something specific. This process helps us make informed decisions.

Testing is a critical component in any field and can play an important role in understanding the complexities of the products, services, or processes being examined.

The reasons for testing generally fall into three main categories: assessment, diagnosis, and evaluation.

The Rules of a Good Test

Not all tests are created equal. To be useful, a test needs to be fair, accurate, and consistent. Three key principles ensure this: validity, reliability, and standardization.

Think of it this way. If you use a thermometer to measure your height, you're not getting a valid measurement. If you step on a scale three times and get three wildly different weights, the scale isn't reliable.

Validity

The extent to which a test measures what it claims to measure.

Validity ensures the test is actually testing the right thing. A test of driving ability should involve driving a car, not just answering questions about traffic signs.

Reliability

The consistency of a test's results over time or across different versions.

Reliability means the results are dependable. If a student takes two different versions of the same algebra test, their scores should be close, assuming their skill level hasn't changed.

Standardization

The process of administering and scoring a test in a consistent, or “standard,” manner.

Standardization creates a level playing field. It ensures that differences in scores are due to differences in what's being measured, not the testing conditions.

A Quick History

Systematic testing isn't a modern invention. Its roots go back thousands of years. As early as 200 B.C., imperial China used rigorous written exams to select civil servants, a practice that valued merit over family connections.

However, modern testing as we know it began to take shape in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Scientists and psychologists like Sir Francis Galton started measuring human abilities, while educators like Alfred Binet developed tests to identify students needing special help in school. Their work laid the foundation for how we use testing today in education, psychology, and scientific research.

These early efforts evolved into the sophisticated tools used today. In education, tests help place students and measure learning. In psychology, they diagnose conditions and guide therapy. In scientific research, they provide the data needed to test hypotheses and advance knowledge.
