The University of Vermont Years
The story of Phish begins not in a crowded stadium, but on a college campus. In 1983, at the University of Vermont, a flyer was posted looking for a bassist. The students who answered and came together would form the first version of the band.
The original lineup featured Trey Anastasio on guitar, Mike Gordon on bass, Jon Fishman on drums, and Jeff Holdsworth, another guitarist. Anastasio, Gordon, and Fishman were the core, with Holdsworth rounding out the sound. They were just a group of students with a shared passion for music, practicing in dorm rooms and anywhere else they could find space.
Finding Their Sound
Like many young bands, their first gigs were a mix of cover songs. They played the music they loved, including classic rock from bands like The Grateful Dead and Led Zeppelin. These early shows, often at university events and local bars in Burlington, Vermont, were where they started to experiment.
They didn’t just play the songs; they played with them. The band began stretching out sections, improvising, and blending different musical styles. This fusion of rock, jazz, funk, and bluegrass was unconventional, but it started to attract a small, dedicated following of students and locals who were intrigued by their unpredictable performances.
The Lineup Solidifies
A key change happened in 1985. Page McConnell, who had been attending Goddard College nearby, was invited to sit in with the band on keyboards. His jazz-influenced playing added a new layer of complexity and melody to their sound. It was a perfect fit.
Soon after McConnell joined, Jeff Holdsworth left the band. This solidified the four-person lineup that has remained the same for decades. With Anastasio, Gordon, Fishman, and McConnell, the classic Phish sound began to take shape. During this period, they also started writing more of their own material, creating the quirky, intricate compositions that would become their signature.
