Introduction to Angles

What is an Angle?

Whenever two lines meet at a point, they form an angle. Think about the corner of a room, the hands of a clock, or where two streets intersect. These are all examples of angles in the real world. In geometry, an angle is a fundamental shape that helps us describe the world around us.

An angle has two main parts. The two lines that form it are called its sides (or sometimes rays). The point where these two sides meet is called the vertex.

Naming Angles

To talk about specific angles, we need a way to name them. There are a few common methods.

The most precise way is to use three points. We pick a point on one side, then the vertex, then a point on the other side. For example, an angle could be named ABC∠ABC, where B is the vertex. The order matters, but you can also call it CBA∠CBA. The vertex letter must always be in the middle.

If there's only one angle at a vertex, you can simply name it by the vertex letter, like B∠B. We can also label an angle with a number or a symbol, such as a Greek letter (like αα or θθ), written inside the angle's arc.

Types of Angles

Angles are classified based on how wide they are. This “wideness” is their measure. While we'll cover measurement in detail later, knowing the basic categories is essential.

The main types of angles are acute, right, obtuse, and straight. Each describes a different range of openness.

An acute angle is sharp, like the tip of a pencil. A right angle is a perfect corner, like in a square or rectangle. We use a small square at the vertex to show an angle is a right angle. An obtuse angle is wider than a right angle but not a straight line. Finally, a straight angle is just a straight line.
