Introduction to the SDG Fund

A New Kind of Fund

To tackle the world's biggest challenges, you need a big, coordinated effort. In 2014, the United Nations established the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Fund to do just that. Its mission is to support activities that drive sustainable development, moving the world closer to the goals laid out in the 2030 Agenda.

The fund isn't about one organization acting alone. Its core idea is teamwork on a global scale.

The SDG Fund operates by creating joint programs that bring different groups to the same table. This includes UN agencies, national governments, academic institutions, civil society organizations, and private companies. By pooling resources and expertise, these programs can address complex issues like poverty and inequality from multiple angles at once.

How It Works

A key principle of the SDG Fund is national ownership. This means the countries where programs operate are in the driver's seat, ensuring the projects are relevant to local needs and priorities. This approach fosters long-term success and sustainability.

The Fund also relies heavily on a model of shared financial responsibility. It doesn't just provide money; it encourages partners to invest as well. Matching funds from national governments and international partners, including the private sector, make up about 58% of the total resources. This shared investment boosts a project's impact and ensures everyone involved has a stake in its success.

The Sustainable Development Goals are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere.

This collaborative model has proven effective. The fund has supported joint programs in 23 countries, reaching more than 5.4 million people. A significant focus has been on empowering women and girls, who make up approximately 70% of the program participants.

Transparency and Trust

Building trust among so many partners requires a serious commitment to transparency. The SDG Fund makes its financial information public, with regular updates available through an online platform called the Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF) Office gateway. This allows anyone to track where the money is coming from and how it's being used, ensuring accountability across all programs.
