These seven systems are ancestral tools for survival. The SEEKING system kept our ancestors exploring for food and water. The FEAR system kept them from becoming a predator's meal. They operate below the level of conscious thought, generating what we can think of as raw affective energy. It's the jolt of RAGE when you're cut off in traffic or the warm pull of the CARE system when you see a loved one. The cognitive label comes later.
Damasio's Somatic Markers
Neurologist Antonio Damasio offered a complementary idea: the Somatic Marker Hypothesis . He argued that decision-making isn't a purely logical process. Instead, our brain outsources part of the job to the body. When we face a choice, our brain quickly simulates the potential outcomes and generates an associated gut feeling—a change in heart rate, muscle tension, or hormone levels. This bodily feeling is a 'somatic marker' (soma means 'body').
These markers are instinctual alarms and incentives. A negative marker (a knot in your stomach) steers you away from a risky business deal. A positive marker (a sense of warmth and expansion) steers you toward connecting with a new friend. This process is a form of homeostatic regulation—using bodily feelings to keep our lives in balance and pointed toward survival and well-being.
