In Romania, the word for Christmas captures the warmth and spirit of the holiday season.

Crăciun is one of the most important and beloved holidays in Romania. Much like in other parts of the world, it's a time deeply rooted in family, faith, and festive traditions. Cities and villages alike come alive with lights, markets, and the sound of carols.

For Romanians, Crăciun is synonymous with gathering. Families come together to share elaborate meals, which often feature special dishes like sarmale (cabbage rolls) and cozonac (a sweet, leavened bread). It's a period of generosity, marked by gift-giving and special attention to children, who eagerly await the arrival of Moș Crăciun (Santa Claus).

Another central tradition is carol singing, known as colindat. Groups of children and adults go from house to house, singing ancient carols (colinde) that tell stories of the nativity and wish households health and prosperity for the coming year.
