What is Research, Really?
Research is a systematic way of asking questions and finding answers. It’s not just for scientists in lab coats; we all do some form of research when we compare prices online or read reviews before trying a new restaurant. At its core, research is a process of inquiry that aims to discover, interpret, and revise knowledge.
The main purpose is to build on what we already know. Think of it as adding a brick to a massive, ever-growing wall of human understanding. The Three Flavors of Research
Not all questions can be answered in the same way. That's why researchers use different approaches, or methodologies. The three main types are quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods.
Quantitative research is all about numbers. It measures and tests things to get hard data. If you want to know how many people in a city own a dog or what percentage of students pass an exam, you'd use quantitative methods. This approach often involves surveys, experiments, and statistical analysis to find patterns and make predictions.
Qualitative research, on the other hand, explores the 'why' and 'how.' It deals with non-numerical information, like people's opinions, feelings, and experiences. Researchers might conduct interviews, observe behaviors, or analyze texts to gain a deep understanding of a topic. This method is great for exploring complex issues that can't be boiled down to a number.
Sometimes, one approach isn't enough. Mixed methods research combines both quantitative and qualitative techniques. This gives a more complete picture. For example, a study could start with a nationwide survey to understand the scope of a problem (quantitative) and then conduct in-depth interviews with a few individuals to explore their personal stories (qualitative).

Playing by the Rules
Because research often involves people, there are important ethical rules to follow. These guidelines ensure that participants are treated with respect and that the research is conducted responsibly. Think of it as a code of conduct for curiosity.
Three key principles stand out: informed consent, confidentiality, and academic integrity.

Informed consent means that people must agree to participate in a study after being told what it's about, what the potential risks are, and that they can quit at any time. No surprises or tricks. It's about respecting a person's autonomy.
Confidentiality is the promise to protect participants' identities. Any personal information collected during a study is kept private and is not shared in a way that could identify the individual. This helps people feel safe sharing honest information.
Finally, researchers have a duty to be honest about their work. This means giving credit to others' ideas by citing them properly and never, ever presenting someone else's work as your own. This is known as avoiding plagiarism.
