Two of the most powerful cognitive biases in gambling are the gambler's fallacy and the near-miss effect. They both trick our minds into seeing patterns where none exist.

Imagine flipping a coin. It lands on heads five times in a row. What do you bet on for the next flip? Many people would instinctively bet on tails, thinking it's "due." But the coin has no memory. Each flip is an independent event, and the odds are always 50/50, regardless of what happened before.

This fallacy can lead people to chase losses, thinking their luck is bound to turn around. But in games of pure chance, the odds never change.

Another powerful bias is the near-miss effect. This happens when the outcome is very close to a win, like getting two out of three cherries on a slot machine. Even though it's technically a loss, the brain treats it like a mini-win.

Studies have shown that the brain activity following a near miss is remarkably similar to the activity following an actual win. This frustratingly close result encourages you to think, "I was so close! I'll get it next time," making it much harder to walk away.

Game designers are well aware of this effect and often program machines to produce more near misses than would occur by pure chance, keeping players engaged for longer.
