A Network of Networks

The internet is not a single thing or a place. It's a vast, global network connecting billions of computers and other electronic devices. Think of it as a network of networks. Your home WiFi is a small network. Your office network is another. The internet is what allows these different, smaller networks all over the world to communicate with each other.

The Internet is the infrastructure, whereas the Web is a service built on top of the infrastructure.

This means the internet is the underlying hardware and connections, like roads and highways. The World Wide Web, with its websites and browsers, is like the cars and buildings that use those roads. When you send an email or visit a website, you are using services that run on top of the internet's infrastructure.

Packets and Protocols

So how do all these connected devices talk to each other? They do it by breaking down information into small pieces called packets. Sending a photo to a friend is like disassembling a Lego castle brick by brick, sending the bricks in small boxes, and having your friend reassemble it on the other side. Each packet contains a small part of the data and information about where it's going.

For this system to work, all the devices need to follow a common set of rules. These rules are called protocols. Protocols are the agreed-upon language of the internet. They ensure that when one computer sends a packet, the receiving computer knows how to interpret it, no matter who made the device or what software it runs.

Without protocols, the internet would be chaos. It would be like people from hundreds of different countries trying to have a single conversation, with no one speaking the same language or following the same rules of etiquette. These standards are what make the global, interconnected network possible.

The Power of Interconnection

The internet began with a simple idea: what if separate, independent computer networks could be linked together? In the early days, networks were isolated islands. A computer at one university could talk to other computers at the same university, but not to one at a different institution.

The breakthrough was developing the technology and protocols that could create an "inter-network," allowing these separate systems to exchange information freely. This is the core purpose and significance of the internet: connecting disparate networks into a single, cohesive global system. This principle of open interconnection is what allows you to access a server in Japan from your laptop in Brazil as easily as if it were in the next room.
