The Shortest Path on a Sphere

On a flat map, the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. But our world isn't flat. It's a sphere. So how do you find the shortest path between two cities like New York and Rome?

You can't just draw a straight line through the Earth. The path has to follow the curve of the planet's surface. The answer is to follow something called a great circle.

The largest possible circle that can be drawn on the surface of a sphere. Its center is the same as the sphere's center, and it divides the sphere into two equal halves, or hemispheres.

Think of slicing an orange perfectly in half. The circular edge you create on the peel is a great circle. No matter how you slice it, as long as your cut goes through the very center of the orange, you've made a great circle. Any other slice that doesn't pass through the center creates a smaller circle, simply called a small circle.

Properties of Great Circles

Great circles have a few key characteristics that make them special.

First, a great circle is the path of shortest distance between any two points on a sphere. This is why airline pilots and ship captains use them for long-distance travel. A flight path that looks like a strange curve on a flat map is actually the most direct route on the globe.

Second, there is only one unique great circle that can be drawn through any two points on a sphere, unless those two points are diametrically opposite (like the North and South Poles). If they are, you can draw an infinite number of great circles through them, just as all lines of longitude pass through both poles.

The equator is a great circle. All lines of longitude are half of a great circle that runs from pole to pole. However, lines of latitude (except for the equator) are not great circles. They are small circles, as their plane doesn't pass through the Earth's center.

Any two great circles will always intersect at two opposite points on the sphere.

Why They Matter

The primary significance of great circles is in navigation. Following a great circle route saves time, fuel, and money. For an airplane, this could mean shaving hours off a flight and burning thousands of gallons less fuel. For a ship, it means a more efficient journey across the vast ocean.

This concept is fundamental to global travel and logistics. It also plays a role in other fields, like telecommunications, for laying undersea cables, and in seismology, for understanding how earthquake waves travel around the planet.
