He believed that reasoning was a formal process that followed specific rules, like a kind of mental machinery.
This was a revolutionary idea. If human reasoning follows a predictable system, could a physical object be made to follow that same system? This shift from divine creation to logical process laid the philosophical groundwork for AI. The focus moved from who could create intelligence to how it might work.

He designed a programmable cart that could move along a set path, a wind-powered organ, and even automatic temple doors that opened with fire and water. His creations used systems of weights, pulleys, and steam to perform their tasks.
These automata were not intelligent. They were sophisticated clockwork machines executing a pre-designed program. But they were a critical step. They proved that life-like behavior could be produced by physical mechanisms, not just by gods or magic. This ancient blend of myth, philosophy, and engineering created the foundation upon which the modern field of artificial intelligence would eventually be built.
