At the heart of Latter-day Saint belief is a personal relationship with God. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe that God is our literal Father in Heaven. We are His spirit children, and He knows us, loves us, and wants us to return to live with Him again.

This understanding shapes how Latter-day Saints view the Godhead. The Godhead consists of three separate and distinct beings: God the Father; His Son, Jesus Christ; and the Holy Ghost. While they are three distinct individuals, they are perfectly one in purpose, power, and glory. Their unified purpose is to bring about our immortality and eternal life.

Jesus Christ is central to this faith. He is the Son of God, the Savior and Redeemer of the world. Through His Atonement—which includes His suffering, death, and resurrection—He made it possible for all people to overcome sin and death and return to God's presence.

Latter-day Saints believe that our life on earth is just one part of a larger eternal journey. This perspective is often called the "plan of salvation" or the "plan of happiness." It answers fundamental questions about where we came from, why we are here, and where we are going after this life.

Before we came to earth, we lived with God as His spirit children. This was our pre-mortal existence. In that realm, we learned about God's plan for us to come to earth, gain a physical body, and have experiences that would help us learn and grow. We chose to follow His plan.

Mortal life is our time on earth. It's a period of testing and learning, where we gain a body, experience joy and sorrow, and learn to make choices. Our experiences here help us develop divine qualities like patience, compassion, and love. The central purpose is to learn to choose good over evil and prepare to return to God.

After we die, our spirits continue to live in the spirit world. Because of Jesus Christ's resurrection, everyone will be resurrected, meaning our spirits and bodies will be reunited. We will then be judged according to our works and desires, determining the degree of glory we will inherit in eternal life. The ultimate goal is to return to live with God and our families forever.

So, what is the purpose of life according to Latter-day Saint doctrine? It is to gain experience, find lasting joy, and progress toward becoming more like our Heavenly Father. This life is not the beginning nor the end of our existence but a crucial step in our eternal development.

These foundational beliefs provide a framework for understanding God's love for His children and the divine potential within each person. They are the core doctrines that guide the lives and choices of members of the Church.
