The Calderdale Way Path Explained
Introduction to the Calderdale Way
The Calderdale Way
The Calderdale Way is a 50-mile (80 km) circular walking route that loops around the borough of Calderdale in West Yorkshire, England. It was created in the 1970s to highlight the area's rich history and stunning landscapes. The path was designed to guide walkers through the diverse scenery of the South Pennines.
Get some fresh, Yorkshire air in your lungs by setting out on an epic 5-day hike exploring Calderdale’s hills, moors and valleys.
While it can be tackled in sections, completing the entire circuit is a rewarding challenge that offers a deep appreciation for this unique part of England.
Along the Path
The official starting and finishing point is Clay House, a historic 17th-century manor in West Vale. From there, the route winds its way around the borough, passing through or near several key towns and villages. These include Ripponden, Mankinholes, the bustling market town of Todmorden, and the historic hilltop village of Heptonstall. The trail continues through Holdsworth, Shelf, and Brighouse before returning to the start.
Walkers experience a wide variety of terrains, from windswept open moorlands and quiet woodlands to peaceful canal towpaths and country lanes. This mix of landscapes is a defining feature of the walk.
It follows old packhorse routes, passing through pretty hillside villages and old mill towns, and provides exceptional panoramic views over the Pennines.
More Than a Walk
The Calderdale Way is more than just a trail for casual hikers. Its challenging terrain and well-defined loop make it a popular venue for competitive events that test the endurance of runners.
Two of the most notable events are the Calderdale Way Relay and the Calderdale Way Ultra. The relay is a team event where runners cover the route in six legs, making it a major fixture in the UK's fell running calendar. The Ultra is a grueling race for individual runners who attempt to complete the entire 50-mile circuit in one go. These events bring a vibrant, competitive spirit to the ancient paths and moorlands of the Way.
