Consulting Industry Overview

What Is Consulting?

At its core, consulting is about providing expert advice to help organizations solve problems and improve their performance. Think of a consultant as a doctor for a business. When a company faces a challenge it can't solve on its own, whether it's slumping sales, inefficient operations, or a struggle to enter a new market, it brings in a consultant.

Consulting is a service industry that helps organizations solve problems, improve performance, and achieve their goals.

These outside experts bring a fresh perspective, specialized knowledge, and analytical rigor. Their primary job is to diagnose the root cause of an issue, develop a strategic plan to fix it, and help the company implement that plan. Companies pay for this objective viewpoint and the targeted expertise that their own teams may not have.

Types of Consulting Firms

The consulting world isn't one-size-fits-all. Firms come in different shapes and sizes, each with a unique focus. Understanding these categories helps clarify what kind of problems they solve.

The main types of firms are strategy firms, large multi-service firms (often called the "Big Four"), and specialized boutique firms.

Strategy firms focus on high-level corporate issues. Think big questions like, "Should we acquire our competitor?" or "How do we grow in the Asian market over the next decade?" They work directly with C-suite executives to shape the long-term direction of a company.

The Big Four accounting firms (Deloitte, PwC, Ernst & Young, and KPMG) also have massive consulting arms. They offer a huge range of services, from technology implementation and risk management to human resources and supply chain logistics. Their projects are often about execution and large-scale transformation.

Boutique firms are smaller and highly specialized. One might focus exclusively on pricing strategies for pharmaceutical companies, while another might only work with non-profits on fundraising. They offer deep expertise in a narrow field.

The Big Three

Within strategy consulting, three firms are known collectively as "MBB" and are widely considered the most prestigious in the industry. These are McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), and Bain & Company.
