The Pilot's Chronograph

In 1952, Breitling released a watch that would become a legend. It wasn't just a timepiece; it was a wrist-worn computer for pilots. The watch was called the Navitimer, a portmanteau of "navigation" and "timer."

This innovation was a direct evolution of Breitling's 1940s Chronomat, which was the first chronograph to feature a slide rule bezel. Willy Breitling, the head of the company at the time, saw the potential to create an indispensable tool for the growing field of aviation.

The Navigation Computer

The Navitimer's defining feature was its complex slide rule bezel. Before electronic flight computers, pilots performed critical calculations by hand. The Navitimer's rotating bezel, with its logarithmic scales, allowed them to do this math right on their wrist.

Pilots could quickly calculate fuel consumption, climb and descent rates, and average speeds. It could even be used for simple multiplications, divisions, and currency conversions. This functionality made it an immediate hit.

The Navitimer's utility was quickly recognized by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), the largest aviation association in the world. In 1954, they chose the Navitimer as their official timepiece. Early models featured the AOPA's winged logo on the dial, making them highly sought after by collectors today. This endorsement cemented the Navitimer's status as the definitive pilot's watch.

From the Skies to the Stars

The Navitimer's journey wasn't limited to Earth's atmosphere. In 1962, it became one of the first Swiss wristwatches in space. Astronaut Scott Carpenter was part of the Mercury-Atlas 7 mission. For his flight, he asked Breitling for a special version of the Navitimer.

He needed a 24-hour dial to distinguish between day and night in orbit, a feature the standard 12-hour Navitimer lacked. Breitling obliged, creating the Navitimer "Cosmonaute." On May 24, 1962, Carpenter wore it aboard the Aurora 7 capsule, securing its place in the history of space exploration.

The Navitimer continued to evolve. While the manual-wind movement was reliable, the watch industry was racing to create the first automatic chronograph. Breitling was at the forefront of this race.

In 1969, the Navitimer evolved again, freeing pilots from the daily ritual of winding their watch.

As part of a joint venture with Heuer-Leonidas and Büren-Hamilton known as "Project 99," Breitling helped develop one of the world's first automatic chronograph movements, the Caliber 11. This groundbreaking movement was placed inside the Navitimer, giving the iconic watch a self-winding mechanism for the first time. It was a major technical milestone that blended the Navitimer's classic functionality with modern convenience.
