They serve as reliable indicators, or “honest signals,” of an individual's underlying genetic quality and robust immune system. This concept is a type of —a trait so resource-intensive to produce and maintain that it proves the bearer's fitness. Once the FFA identifies a face, another region, the (OFC), kicks in to evaluate it. The OFC is a central part of the brain's reward system. When it encounters a face with attractive features, it releases dopamine, creating a sensation of pleasure. This neural reward reinforces our attraction, encouraging us to seek out these traits.

While culture plays a role in shaping beauty standards, certain preferences appear to be universal, likely because they are tied to these biological signals of health and fertility. Three of the most powerful signals are symmetry, skin clarity, and youthfulness.
Facial symmetry is a strong indicator of developmental stability. A symmetrical face suggests that an individual has a genetic makeup resilient enough to withstand environmental stressors, parasites, and diseases during development.
