Defining Your Anti-Vision

Start with What You Don't Want

Most career advice starts by asking you to dream big. To imagine your perfect job, your ideal life. But what if the canvas is too blank? What if societal expectations and years of routine have made it hard to even know what you truly want?

Instead of adding, let's try subtracting. This approach is called Via Negativa.

Via Negativa

noun

A Latin phrase meaning "the negative way." It's an approach to gaining clarity by focusing on what to eliminate or avoid, rather than what to add or pursue.

Think of it like sculpting. A sculptor doesn’t create a statue by adding clay. They reveal it by chipping away the stone that isn't part of the final form. By defining what you absolutely do not want your life to look like in five or ten years, you start to chisel away the noise. You create boundaries, and within those boundaries, your true desires have room to appear.

Audit Your Energy Drains

The first step is to identify the sources of 'psychic entropy' in your life right now. Psychic entropy is the mental chaos and exhaustion caused by activities, environments, and obligations that drain your focus and energy without offering fulfillment. It's the opposite of a state of flow.

To find these drains, conduct a life audit. For one week, pay close attention to how you feel. Be brutally honest. Which meetings leave you feeling depleted? What tasks do you procrastinate on? Which social interactions feel more like a chore than a connection? These are the raw materials for your Anti-Vision.

Area of LifeEnergy Drain (What exhausts you?)What would its absence feel like?
CareerConstant urgent emails, micromanagementFocus, ownership, proactive work
FinancesAnxiety over unpredictable incomeStability, freedom to plan
HealthSkipping workouts due to exhaustionMore energy, less stress
RelationshipsForced networking eventsGenuine connections, mutual support

The items in your 'Energy Drain' column are clues. They are the small, daily components of the larger life you want to avoid.

Map Your Nightmare Scenario

Now, let's project those energy drains into the future. Your 'Anti-Vision' is a detailed picture of the future you are actively working to prevent. It's not about being pessimistic; it's about being strategic. The human brain is wired with a negativity bias, meaning we react more strongly to potential threats than to potential rewards. We can use this quirk of our psychology as a powerful motivator.

Describe your nightmare career scenario in detail. What does it look like 10 years from now if you change nothing?

  • Role: Are you in the same high-stress corporate role, but with more responsibility and less connection to the actual work?
  • Autonomy: Do you still have to ask for permission for every small decision?
  • Finances: Are you making more money but have less time and energy to enjoy it?
  • Life: Has your work completely consumed your identity?

My Anti-Vision: In 10 years, I'm a senior manager in a slow-moving bureaucracy, spending my days in back-to-back meetings that produce little value. I feel disconnected from my team's work, my health has declined from stress, and I have no time for the creative projects I once loved.

This clear, undesirable outcome is more motivating than a vague dream. It gives you something concrete to push away from.

With a clear Anti-Vision, every decision becomes simpler. Does this opportunity move me further away from my nightmare scenario? If the answer is yes, it's worth considering. If not, it's a distraction.

This isn't about avoiding failure. It's about designing a life where you're not afraid to fail at the right things, because you've already eliminated the paths that lead to a success you never wanted.
