Introduction to Tally

What is Tally?

Tally is an accounting software that helps businesses record their daily financial transactions. Think of it as a digital ledger book that tracks everything from sales and purchases to payments and receipts. It's incredibly popular, especially in South Asia, because it's powerful yet straightforward, handling complex accounting tasks with ease.

Tally Prime has transformed the way businesses handle accounting and financial management.

At its core, Tally is designed to give you a clear, real-time picture of your company's financial health. It organizes all your financial data in one place, making it easy to generate reports, understand your cash flow, and stay compliant with financial regulations.

Installation and First Look

Getting Tally set up on your computer is the first step. You'll need to download the installer from the official Tally Solutions website. They offer different versions, including a free educational mode which is perfect for learning. The educational mode has all the features of the full version but with one limitation: you can only enter data for a few specific dates each month.

Once downloaded, run the installer. It’s a standard setup process where you'll be prompted to choose an installation location and confirm the settings. After a few clicks, Tally will be installed and ready to launch.

When you first open Tally, you'll be greeted by the startup screen. From here, you can activate a license, use the educational mode, or reactivate an existing license.

The main screen you'll work with is called the Gateway of Tally. This is your command center. It might look simple, but it's the starting point for every action you'll take. The interface is primarily keyboard-driven, which makes navigation fast once you get the hang of the shortcuts.

The main menu lists major accounting areas like Masters (for creating accounts), Vouchers (for entering transactions), and Reports. The vertical button bar on the right contains shortcuts to frequently used functions, which change depending on the screen you're on.

Creating Your First Company

Before you can start entering transactions, you need to create a company file. This file will hold all of your business's financial data. From the Gateway of Tally, you'll select the 'Create Company' option.

This opens the Company Creation screen, which is essentially a form asking for your business's details. You'll need to fill in some key information:

FieldDescription
Company NameThe legal name of your business.
Mailing NameThe name that will appear on printed reports. Usually the same as the company name.
AddressThe registered address of your business.
State & CountryImportant for tax compliance, though we won't dive into that yet.
Financial Year Beginning FromThe start date of your accounting period (e.g., April 1st in India).
Books Beginning FromThe date you actually start recording transactions in Tally. Often the same as the financial year start.

After filling out the form, Tally will ask you to configure some basic features for your new company. For now, you can accept the default settings. You can always change them later. Once you save, your company is created, and you'll be taken back to the Gateway of Tally, ready to start managing your finances.
