Think of it as a coiled spring, loaded with potential energy. This is the core of an 'active' stance: your weight is never truly settled. It's constantly prepared to shift, whether to power a strike, absorb an impact, or evade an attack. This all starts from the ground up.

Every powerful movement, from a punch to a kick, begins with a connection to the floor. Your feet don't just hold you up; they drive force through your entire body.

This transfer of energy is called , or the kinetic chain. When you push off the ground, that force travels up through your ankles, knees, and hips, rotating your torso and finally extending through your limb for a strike. A solid, active stance is the crucial first link in that chain. If your base is weak or your weight is poorly distributed, the chain breaks, and your power dissipates before it ever reaches its target.

Width, Weight, and Trade-Offs
