Installing Tableau

Getting started with Tableau Desktop requires a quick installation. Tableau offers a 14-day free trial, which is perfect for learning. Students and teachers can often get a free one-year license through the Tableau for Students program.

Here’s how to install it:

  1. Go to the Tableau Desktop website. Search for 'Tableau Desktop trial' to find the official download page.
  2. Enter your email. You'll need to provide a business or student email to start the trial.
  3. Download the installer. The site will provide the correct installer for your operating system (Windows or Mac).
  4. Run the installer. Open the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions. Accept the license agreement and let the installation complete.
  5. Activate your trial. Once installed, open Tableau. It will prompt you to start your trial. Fill in the registration form, and you're all set.

A Quick Tour of the Interface

When you first open Tableau Desktop, you'll see the start page. This is your command centre for beginning a new project.

Let's break down the main areas you'll interact with:

  • Connect Pane: Located on the left, this is where you choose the data source you want to work with. You can connect to anything from a simple Excel file to a complex database.
  • Data Pane: Once connected to data, this pane on the left side of the workspace shows all the available fields from your data, organised into Dimensions (qualitative data like names or dates) and Measures (quantitative, numerical data like sales or temperature).
  • Workspace/Canvas: This is the main area where you will build your visualisations by dragging and dropping fields from the Data Pane.
  • Shelves and Cards: These are areas like 'Columns', 'Rows', 'Filters', and 'Marks' where you drop data fields to structure your visualisation. Placing a field on the 'Rows' shelf creates a row for each item in that field, for example.

Don't worry about memorising everything at once. You'll become familiar with these areas as you start building your first visualisations.
