Super Amart Success and Property Empire
Introduction to John Van Lieshout
From Immigrant to Tycoon
John Van Lieshout’s story is a classic tale of rags to riches. Born in the Netherlands in 1946, he moved to Australia with his family at the age of 14. They arrived with little to their name, part of a wave of post-war European migration seeking new opportunities.
Van Lieshout's entrepreneurial journey started early. He left school at 15 and began working, eventually finding his way into the world of upholstery. This hands-on experience with furniture wasn't just a job; it was the foundation of a future empire. He learned the trade from the inside out, gaining a deep understanding of how furniture was made and sold.
The Birth of Super Amart
In 1974, with a small loan, Van Lieshout opened his first furniture store in Brisbane. He called it Amart, short for “A-grade Mart.” The concept was simple but powerful: offer good quality, affordable furniture to everyday Australian families. While other stores focused on high-end markets, Van Lieshout saw an opportunity to serve the vast middle class.
His big breakthrough came with the creation of Super Amart. These were massive, warehouse-style showrooms, often located in suburban areas where rent was cheaper. By cutting overheads and buying in bulk, he could pass significant savings on to his customers. The brand's slogan, “Bargains Galore,” became a household phrase. The business grew rapidly, expanding from a single store into a dominant national chain.
Super Amart's success was built on a straightforward formula: low prices, wide selection, and readily available stock. Customers could walk in, choose their furniture, and take it home the same day. This was a significant departure from the traditional model of waiting weeks for an order to arrive. Van Lieshout understood what his customers wanted and relentlessly delivered it.
A New Chapter in Property
After more than three decades of building his retail empire, Van Lieshout decided it was time for a change. In 2006, he sold Super Amart to a private equity firm for a reported $500 million. This sale marked the end of an era but the beginning of a new one.
He didn't retire. Instead, he pivoted, channeling his wealth and business acumen into property development and investment. He founded the Unison Projects Group, which quickly became a major player in the Queensland property market. The company develops and manages a diverse portfolio, including industrial parks, commercial buildings, and residential communities.
This transition from retail king to property magnate demonstrated his versatility as a businessman. He applied the same core principles of identifying market gaps and delivering value that made Super Amart a success to his new ventures in real estate. John Van Lieshout’s journey from a young immigrant with nothing to one of Australia's wealthiest individuals is a powerful lesson in vision and hard work.
