Substack Basics

Setting Up Your Substack

Substack is a platform designed to help writers connect directly with their audience through newsletters. It handles the tech, so you can focus on creating. Getting started is straightforward.

First, head to Substack's website and sign up. You'll be prompted to create your publication by choosing a name and a web address, which will look something like yourname.substack.com. This address is your publication's permanent home online.

Choose your subdomain carefully. Make it short, memorable, and easy for people to type. It's a core part of your brand.

You'll also write a one-line description. This is your elevator pitch—it appears in many places across the platform and tells potential readers what you're all about in a single sentence. Be clear and concise.

Customizing Your Publication

Once your account is created, it's time to make your publication feel like your own. Customization helps establish your brand identity and makes your newsletter recognizable. You can access all these options from your publication's dashboard under 'Settings'.

A crucial step is writing your 'About' page. This is your chance to tell your story. Explain who you are, what topics you'll cover, how often you plan to publish, and why someone should subscribe. A compelling About page can be the deciding factor for a new reader.

Next, upload a logo and a cover image. Your logo should be a simple, square image that represents your brand. The cover image is a wider banner that appears at the top of your publication's homepage. Finally, you can adjust the theme by selecting accent colors and font styles that match your aesthetic.

Creating Your First Post

With your publication set up and customized, you're ready to write. From your dashboard, click 'New post'. This opens Substack's editor, which is designed to be clean and simple, letting you focus on your words.

You can format your text using the toolbar that appears when you highlight a word or phrase. You can add bold, italics, links, headers, and blockquotes to structure your writing and make it easier to read.

Substack isn't just for text. You can easily integrate multimedia to make your posts more engaging. The editor allows you to add images, embed videos from platforms like YouTube or Vimeo, and even record and insert audio clips directly. Buttons are another useful feature for creating clear calls to action, like linking to an external site or a previous post.

Publishing and Scheduling

When your post is ready, you have a few options for publishing. Before you send it, you can preview what it will look like on the web and in an email inbox. This is a great way to catch any formatting issues.

You can also send a test email to yourself to see exactly how it will appear to your subscribers.

Consistency is Key: Substack data shows that consistent posting helps your newsletter grow.

If you're not ready to publish immediately, you can schedule your post to go out at a specific date and time. This is perfect for maintaining a consistent publishing schedule without having to be at your computer at the exact moment of publication.

Once you hit 'Publish', you can choose to send it to your email subscribers, publish it to your website, or both. With that, your first piece is out in the world.
