What is Statistics?

Every day, we're surrounded by data. It's in the news we read, the weather forecasts we check, and the ads we see online. Statistics is the science of making sense of all this data. It's a powerful tool that helps us collect, analyze, and interpret information to understand the world around us and make better decisions.

Think of it as a way to find patterns and stories hidden within numbers. From medicine to marketing, from sports to government, statistics helps people answer important questions. How effective is a new drug? What products do customers want to buy? Which baseball player is having the best season? These questions can't be answered by guessing; they require a systematic way of handling information.

The field of statistics is generally divided into two main branches. Each serves a different, but equally important, purpose in the journey from raw data to useful insight.

Describing vs. Inferring

The first branch is descriptive statistics. Its goal is straightforward: to summarize and describe the main features of a set of data. Imagine you have the final exam scores for a class of 30 students. Listing all 30 scores isn't very helpful. Instead, you could use descriptive statistics to calculate the average score, the highest and lowest scores, or the most common score. This gives you a clear, concise picture of how the class performed.

Descriptive statistics turn a large, messy dataset into a simple, easy-to-understand summary.

The second branch is inferential statistics. This is where things get really interesting. Instead of just describing the data you have, you use it to make educated guesses, or inferences, about a much larger group. It would be impossible to ask every single person in a country who they'll vote for in an election. Instead, pollsters survey a smaller group, called a sample, and use inferential statistics to predict the election's outcome for the entire population.

Inferential statistics uses a small sample to draw conclusions about a large population.

Both branches work together. You typically start by describing your sample data, and then you use that information to make an inference about the broader population.

Even professional sports teams rely heavily on statistics to evaluate player performance and make strategic decisions during games.
