Introduction to Sampling
What Is Sampling?
Imagine you're cooking a large pot of soup. To check if it's seasoned correctly, you don't need to eat the entire pot. You just taste a spoonful. If the spoonful is good, you can be pretty confident the whole pot of soup is good. That's the basic idea behind sampling.
In research, we often want to know something about a large group of people or things. This entire group is called the population.

The entire group of individuals, items, or data that you are interested in studying.
It’s usually not practical to collect information from every single member of a population. Instead, we select a smaller group to study closely. This smaller, manageable group is called a sample.
Sample

A subset of the population that is selected for study.
By studying the sample, we can make educated guesses, or inferences, about the population as a whole. The key is to make sure our sample accurately represents the larger group, just like the spoonful of soup should have a little bit of everything in the pot.
Why Not Study Everyone?
Studying an entire population, also known as a census, is often impossible. There are a few big reasons why researchers rely on samples instead.
It's practical. Imagine a company wants to know how many people in the United States prefer their brand of coffee. Contacting over 330 million people would be a logistical nightmare. It would take too long, cost a fortune, and be nearly impossible to complete.
It's efficient. A well-chosen sample can provide surprisingly accurate information much more quickly and cheaply. A survey of a few thousand people can give the coffee company the insights it needs in a fraction of the time and cost.
It's sometimes necessary. If you're testing the lifespan of light bulbs, you have to burn them out to see how long they last. You can't test every bulb, or you'd have none left to sell. In cases like this, sampling is the only option.
Sampling allows us to get reliable information about a large group by studying just a small part of it.
The Sampling Frame
So, how do you actually choose a sample from a population? You start with a list. This list is called the sampling frame.

A list of all the items or individuals in the population from which a sample can be drawn.
Ideally, the sampling frame should include every single member of the population, and no one who isn't part of it. For example, if your population is all the students at a specific high school, your sampling frame would be the official school enrollment list for the current year. If your population is all the restaurants in a city, your sampling frame might be a business directory.
A good sampling frame is crucial. If the list is incomplete or out of date, your sample might not be a good reflection of the population. For instance, using a phone book from 10 years ago as a sampling frame for a city's residents would be a bad idea. It would miss new residents and people who only use cell phones, leading to a biased and inaccurate sample.
